HGTV gives Palm Springs design firm a “Curb Appeal” award

A Palm Springs design firm has garnered attention and an award from HGTV for its work on home exteriors.

H3K Design, which specializes in interior and exterior design work, won the “Editor’s Pick” award in the Curb Appeal category part of the 2017 HGTV Faces of Design Awards. The annual design competition asks nationwide viewers and pros to vote on projects from across the country.

The Palm Springs design firm had entered two of 12 design categories. A front yard remodel of a midcentury ranch-style home in Palm Springs was entered into and won the Curb Appeal category while the interior design of micro homes at Palm Canyon Mobile Club in Palm Springs was entered into the Living Large in Small Spaces category.

“Our Midcentury Ranch design was positioned against other compelling projects from all across the country, but our design clearly resonated with the judges,” said Howard Hawkes, H3K’s partner and principal in a prepared statement issued Tuesday.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled that the innovative and colorful nature of our design work has been nationally recognized.”

The 1963 Charles DuBois-designed ranch already had an abundance of architectural detail, so H3K wanted to create a simple stage to complement the overall features.

Their work included adding a lush green lawn to create an “oasis in the desert” look with geometrically placed plants, a red front door, Sputnik-style light fixture and a water feature with entry bridge.
